Mini mustn’t maintain its monopoly on the multiplication of microcars—at least that seems to be Fiat’s take. While the 2012 Cinquecento is weeks away from its launch in the U.S., and the semi-convertible 500C will arrive a few months later, the Italian car giant has even more planned for its diminutive hatchback. A long-wheelbase version, probably with four doors (rather than the Mini Clubman’s awkward 2.5-door setup), is in development, and, based on the spy photos seen here, it appears that Fiat also is working on an all-wheel-drive version of the 500. It likely will hit the market in mid-to-late 2012 as a 2013 model. 

The visual differences between the car shown in these spy photos and a normal, front-wheel-drive 500 aren’t numerous, but they are significant. This test mule rides much higher than a typical 500, which has only 4.1 inches of ground clearance in U.S. spec. A differently shaped muffler can be seen placed higher and in a different location than the one on front-drive 500s, presumably to accommodate AWD bits. The vertical gray tape at the trailing edge of the front fenders looks to be covering vertical vents or slats, a feature that might be specific to the future all-wheel-drive 500 or which could be bound for the 500’s face lift, expected around the same time as this new model.

Positioned between the standard Fiat 500 and the more powerful Abarth model, the 500T Sport should feature a less powerful version of the turbocharged 1.4-liter four-cylinder currently found in the Abarth 500.

The Abarth model pumps out 160-hp and the standard Fiat 500 with the 1.4-liter has 100-hp, so the 500T Sport should come in at around 130-140 hp. The 500 Abarth in Europe makes 133 hp in its regular trim, so that could be the 500T powerplant American will see.
The document also showed that an Abarth convertible model is on its way to the U.S. as a 2013 model, but that isn’t a huge surprise considering it already exists in other markets. We expect it to be identical to the Abarth coupe but with a power-sliding cloth roof similar to what is found on the 500c seen above.

 

In many ways, the car the Abarth 500 reminds me of most, at least in general feel, is a Volkswagen Mark I GTI, and that's a good thing. Like the original GTI, it's small, nimble, light, and with a power-to-weight ratio that makes for lively performance. The Fiat 500 Abarth is some of the most fun you can have on four wheels.

 In recent model years, Toyota has added more off-road-oriented options with T|X and T|X Pro packages in addition to the PreRunner, X-Runner, and TRD Off-Road Package. Also, for the 2012 model year, Toyota expanded the number of four-cylinder Tacoma models and gave these trucks a light refresh, with a somewhat different grille, and less brightwork inside. The orange interior lighting was replaced with blue, and a new standard sound system included six speakers, Bluetooth hands-free capability, and a USB/iPod port. 2013 Buick Verano

Carrying the conservative styling you would expect from a Buick, the Verano sports signature features like the brand’s waterfall grille and blue bezels around the headlights. It’s a clean design with a few extra touches of style thrown in to class-up its look. Handsome, yes, but it won’t draw a crowd.

Unfortunately the interior is totally underwhelming. Even at the highest price point ($25,965 before destination) fully adjustable power seats are simply unavailable. The seat cushion slides forward and backward and tilts electrically, but the backrest does not. In fact, adjusting the backrest angle involves fiddling with a poorly placed lever. There’s also no memory function.

It’s also hard to see out of the Verano’s rear, an issue that’s further compounded by the lack of a backup camera. It seems strange that this car would forego such a feature given that the majority of Buick buyers are well on in years.

Buick partnered with the NCAA last year, and it paid big dividends. Advertising shown during tournament games as well as website ads resulted in 1.35 million visitors to Buick.com to check out what the line of new Buick models had to offer, while the automaker's page on the NCAA website received 100,000 visitors, and Buick videos had well over 110,000 hits.

the Verano Turbo should be end up about 300 pounds lighter than the Regal GS, it will be quicker. We're told the initial 255-hp iteration of the Regal GS is sort an interim step. Regardless of the frequency, our pulse still races every time we fire up a ten-cylinder engine. It's not just the unique sound or the warbled vibration that gets the blood flowing – it's the anticipation. Whether the badge says Gallardo, Viper or M5, a V10 under the hood promises intoxicating power and frenzied excitement.

The new Audi R8 GT packs just such an engine – a 5.2-liter V10. Mid-mounted in an aluminum and magnesium monocoque chassis, the powerplant is rated at 560 horsepower. With all-wheel drive and a sequential gearbox, the coupe rockets to 60 mph in 3.6 seconds before hitting an aerodynamic wall just shy of 200 miles per hour. It is, notes Audi, the lightest, fastest and most powerful supercar in its lineup.

Constructing the R8 GT was hardly a mild undertaking. Audi first put the R8 on a diet, shedding 180 pounds. They then turned their attention to the powerplant, where engineers were able to coax the 5.2-liter V10 into delivering another 35 hp. The suspension, brakes and underpinnings were upgraded, while the automatic gearbox and all-wheel-drive system received their own new set of commands. Lastly, unique cosmetic touches were applied that not only improved the R8's appearance, but boosted performance.

As can be expected with a facelift model, Audi is only opting for minor tweaks on both the exterior and interior of the car. It appears that the 2013 R8 will - for the first time - carry a refreshed grille that was first introduced last year by the e-Tron Spyder Concept. New headlights are also in the plans, as is a new S-tronic dual clutch gearbox, which replaces the R-tronic sequential manual gearbox on the current model.

Some other prominent changes expected to be made on the face lifted R8 are the use of Audi’s latest MMI interface system, an increased use of carbon fiber to cut down the car’s weight and, most importantly, an improved engine output from the current model’s 525-horsepower output all to the way to the neighborhood of 540 horsepower.

This is the first time that these details have been divulged, so we’re more than curious to see how the facelift model of the iconic R8 will look and feel like before Audi ushers in the next generation model in 2014.

"That supercar is just an idea at the moment," he told us. "We have five model lines including the Cajun [911, Boxster/Cayman, Panamera, Cayenne, Cajun crossover]. This is a possible sixth. I've said there is a big gap in price between the 911 Turbo and the 918 Spyder. But every time we do a new model line, we need customers wanting a Porsche in that segment, and see if that segment is big enough and whether there is a business case."

If that modular components set must encompass the R8 and this new Porsche supercar, it will also likely need to cover smaller machines, including the Boxster two generations hence, and possibly the mooted Audi R4 and baby Porsche, and, in rear-engine form, the 991's replacement. It will need a highly flexible design.

Sports-car product planning has gotten extremely complex and political at the VW Group since Porsche joined the family. Big egos are clashing, cabals of obsessive and successful engineers are engaging in turf wars, and powerful brand values need protecting. Anything you might read about projected models more than three years out is subject to change.

 the Honda plan and has earned the company an excellent reputation. On hand for the car’s debut, American Honda Motor Co. Executive VP John Mendel pointed out the Accord’s unprecedented 26 times it has been named to Car & Driver’s Top 10 car of the year list.

Looking like a slightly stylized version of the current Accord, the new model is smaller overall and with a lower roofline, although Honda claims it has achieved the same interior space. It’s also a lighter vehicle, although Honda isn’t getting into specifics at this point.

The Accord will be the first model to use Honda’s new powertrains, featuring direct-injection among other technologies. Both a V6 and a new 2.4-liter 4-cylinder will be offered, with a newly developed CVT transmission for the 4-cylinder and a 6-speed automatic for the V6. Honda hasn’t announced specs but says it expects the Accord to deliver class leading fuel economy. Whether it can best the new Fusion’s 26/37-mpg rating will be, however, be tough.

  While many mid-size competitors are dropping their six-cylinder options, the Accord will offer a revised and more powerful version of its familiar 3.5-liter V-6 with cylinder deactivation. But the bread-and-butter Accord will be the four-cylinder model. Direct injection helps the 2.4-liter four make at least 181 horsepower and 177 pound-feet of torque, with improved fuel economy. A six-speed manual will be offered; the automatic will be a CVT. A plug-in-hybrid version will couple a 2.0-liter four-cylinder with a 161-hp electric motor.  A 6-kWh lithium-ion battery  will offer 10 to 15 miles of city driving range and will recharge in less than four hours using a standard 120-volt outlet. Three selectable modes will allow the hybrid driver to choose among fully electric, hybrid, and “direct drive,” which decouples the electric motor for more efficient cruising.

On the safety and convenience side, Accord will now offer optional technology like a Lane Departure Warning (LDW), Forward Crash Warning (FCW), and blind spot monitoring systems that utilize front- and side-facing cameras. In addition, Bluetooth smartphone connectivity and Pandora Internet radio now come standard. No real groundbreakers here, just existing technology that's now available to the Accord masses.

More interesting is what Honda hinted at for the volume selling sedan. While the new coupe retains similar dimensions as the current generation, the sedan will have a smaller overall footprint, shorter wheelbase and reduced weight. Honda claims these changes will give it better handling and improved driving dynamics (and no doubt help with the fuel economy targets).

No word on when we'll actually see the next-generation Accord, as a Honda rep tells us there are no plans to show it at the Chicago or New York auto shows, but we did learn that the 2013 Accord Plug-in Hybrid sedan launches next winter.

2013 Acura NSX

The original NSX was something to drool over because of that, there was always a need for a successor, but because of various reasons work was always delayed up until the recently introduced 2013 Acura NSX. The last attempt to build the new Acura NSX was killed in its relative infancy in 2008, “thanks” to financial crisis plaguing the planet; it was supposed to be a supercar powered by a V10 engine, front mounted, and very wallet damaging.

The 2012 Detroit Auto Show, however, is where something quite different from that version has made its way, the Acura NSX. The Acura NSX concept car brought by Acura indeed seems to be almost ready for production and has a high change sale figures will be high.

The profile view reveals a trunklid that kicks up higher and carries more visual weight, taillights that are more rectangular and wrap farther around the corner from tail to side panel, and a steeper cut line where sheetmetal meets the plastic rear bumper.

The door handles on the ILX concept have been creased and shaped into a form that looks vaguely inspired by medieval weaponry, and the character line that intersects the front and rear door-handle depressions on the Honda kicks up above the rear door handle on the Acura. The lower crease that runs between the wheel wells is more pronounced, and the lower sills are more aggressive. From the front, you don't have to squint too hard to make out the Civic bloodlines, but the Acura face is present and accounted for. There’s also a sharper break between the hood and fender, deeper set headlamps, and no lower grille. The concept rides on 19-inch wheels. Details on the cabin are scarce at this point, but keyless entry and start, and Acura’s various technology packages are said to be on offer.

Its chief advantage will be power off the line, likely giving the NSX a lightning fast quarter mile speed. Its 0-60mph ratings will definitely be rubber-laying. Another advantage will be control. Having two independent motors on the front axle of a rear wheel car is something Audi has demonstrated in many of its supercar concepts before, such as the eTron. It means the motors can be independently controlled to give the car maximum handling and wheel grip in curves and on uneven pavement.

Finally, Acura has a new twist on this design: regenerative braking while turning. Since the inside wheel often runs slower than the outer wheels in a curve, that inner wheel with a motor mounted can be used to regenerate electricity as it slows to control the turn. That gives both an unprecedented amount of control in the turn, but also a definite increase in efficiency.
